Peter Jackson, The Silmarillion, The Silmarillion Movie
I think that it would be interesting if PJ made a movie about the Silmarillion but I think that it would be a little too hard because there is so much information in that book. I think that ‘Fan’ is right that there should be a story about Luthien and Beren at least 🙂 I hope that Mr. Jackson says yes to doing that movie 🙂
Uh…Peter Jackson has said on record that he doesn’t have the rights to the Silmarillion, thus it’s impossible for him to film it. The Tolkien Estate refuses to grant the rights.
You’re right…I believe that Christopher Tolkein still owns the rights to The Silmarillion…..
What an amazing letter! I think it embodies a great deal of what Tolkien,Peter Jackson and Weta fans are feeling. I do hope everything that was said is taken into consideration not only by Peter but by the tolkien estate as well ( being that they still own the rights to the silmarillion). I personally want to see these films made, but to get it correct will probably be the biggest financial undertaking in history ( Excluding the US Debt). I would be satisfied to see the silmarillion as a well produced TV Series. Either way, If made, this will prove to be the most cherished work of all time, and the fans will be forever in your debt Peter.
I totally agree with this fan. I have finish reading this amazing book just yesterday, and I cannot stop thinking about all the stories. It would be great to watch the movie, I hope Peter Jackson feels the same!
The letter from a fan voices alot of my own feelings. I read the Hobbit in 1975, I was 10 yrs old. I’m glad its being made as a trilogy, Can’t see any other way to do it justice. The book so captivated me that I didn’t stop there, I read the Lord of the Rings Trilogy next. I had to wait a year, 1977, to ask for & get, The Silmarillion, which tied the stories together, filled in the blanks & is a big part of this saga. Where would any of the books be without the creation of the rings? I hope Peter Jackson continues this great story that was such a part of my childhood. He has done an amazing job bringing Middle Earth to life & I can’t imagine anyone else filling his shoes. I have a great love for works stories of fantasy thats lasted more than 35 years, starting with Tolkiens books & ending with Peter Jennings movies. I waited 30 yrs for the final piece of the story, the completion of Tolkiens saga of Middle Earth, The Children of Hurin. I hope we don’t have to wait as long for it to be brought to life. Thank you Peter Jackson for doing such a great job bringing a piece of my childhood to life in such excellant fashion, so I can share it with my kids & grandkids!
concerning a silmarillion movie, this is something i’ve given much thought to over 40 years. many folks say theres to much material;so you must stay on the main story…as in the 1st movie, cate blanchett/galadriel narrates a series of scenes 5 to 20 minutes long, intersperced with galadriel herself shown “creating”the scenes while telling the story.
1st film title:The Lord Of the Rings;THE FIRST AGE.of course many of the characters would be seen throughout the film just as in the book.just think.Eru,Manwe, morgoth,Elbereth, the fashioning of the world Cuivienen & the road to the Western lands.Aule and the Dwarves. But as I said “the main story” even as we would, galadriel pauses, sighs and tells of FEANOR and the SILMARIL’S…the kinstrife, the grinding ice,Gondolin,Doriath. The coming of Men,BEREN & LUTHIEN and EARENDIL…Elwing & THE GREAT JEWEL born upon the storm. ELROND, ELROS and the creation of NUMENOR. Of course theres much more…so at the end of each installment Galadriel looks you in the eye and enjions you to read the “Ancient Texts”..thus giving you the understanding that she is relating this story long after she’s left middle earth (maybe a look out of her window at valimar)
film 2:The Lord Of The Rings;[THE SECOND AGE:RISE OF SAURON]…NUMENOR, ,the Dominion of Sauron in middleEarth. The establishment of Rivendell, the kings of Numenor;Nimloth is burned, captured Sauron deceives Ar-Pharazon…the Valar break the world and seven ships survive//plenty of material here.
film 3:The Lord Of THE Rings; [The Coming of Wizards] Elrond weds daughter of Galadriel, hobbits cross the Misty mountains,Gondor reaches its zenith,Wizards come to the Grey Havens, A blackness arises in Dol-Gulder,settling of the Shire,a Balrog is awakened in Moria rohan is settled,Aragorn is born.
If you cant see all of this then your not try’in
I Love this whole story…it teaches as well as entertains I hope they finish it,
I pray to the Valar that Peter will make a Silmarillion movie, for there are too many of us, who would be more than grateful and Peter would definitely earn a place among the mighty Ainur!
I would LOVE to see the Silmarillion+ depicted, however I totally disagree with it being a movie, even as a series of movies. It’s too big. Only a longer series could ever do it justice, even if some of the stories were to be greatly abridged or omitted in favor of the greater history. Think Lord of the Rings, Lost, and Game of Thrones. It need not go on forever, just remain proportionate to the LotR and Hobbit movies. Before the making of the world could be an excellent project for music composers, need not be part of the video production, though pieces of it for episode intros might be cool for us lore geeks.
It will never happen since Christopher Tolkien has the copyrights and he has said that he will not allow any more of his father’s books to be made into movies
The Silmarillion should be an HBO style series like Game of Thrones. There is too much content to explore in a single 3 hour movie to do the book justice. And the Tolkien estate and Chris have always said they’d never allow movies or games or additional books and yet, there’s been a ton of products and merchandise over the years with more coming. It’s a ploy to give the estate maximum leverage in negotiating deals. I absolutely expect the Silmarrillion to be licensed, but it will be to a studio and production team that proves they respect the material and will be true to Tolkien’s vision.
It might be best to produce “The Silmarillion” as a multi-season series. I dont think a few 2hr movies could address all of the periods/ages that the book covers. Nevertheless – it’s a total goldmine for The Tolkien Family and Mr. Jackson. Both parties need to set their differences aside and give way to what undoubtedly would be the most epic adaptation of Tolkien literature.
I am not thrilled to see Radagast or the fall of the Necromancer.
